The long-awaited study rooms are the newest addition to the DMACC Boone Campus library. What has been on the minds of staff and students for years finally solidified when construction began in October 2024.

Melanie Murray, library specialist at Boone Campus, said that the rooms were made a reality through the collaborative efforts of Director of Libraries Christine Whitney, Rebecca Funke, campus administration, and the maintenance team. Murray stressed that it couldn’t have been possible without the interests and needs of DMACC students.

There are three rooms in total. Each room is 12’ x 12’ and contains a whiteboard, outlets, and table to accommodate the study needs of four students. Students can reserve a room by scanning the provided QR code, or through the library tab on DMACC’s site. If a student happens to catch them when there’s an unreserved room, the library also accepts walk-ins. Students can reserve a room up to two hours, but that time can be extended if the following time slot hasn’t been claimed.

Murray said there are benefits of reserving a room over visiting the Academic Achievement Center.

“The library and the AAC work closely together to give students a full schedule of study needs. The AAC provides tutoring, essay editing, study strategies, and testing accommodations for a more guided study experience, while the library provides research assistance and quiet spaces for independent and group study,” she said. “Working together, the library and the AAC can provide a greater number of study options than either could manage alone.”

From the making to their function, it seems that collaboration is a key component to the new study rooms’ permanence.
