Spring break vacation not in the cards? Don’t fret, plan a staycation!
Dunning Spring Park, which is just over a three hour drive northeast of Boone, offers some nice hiking trails. But that’s not all, it also offers some of Iowa’s very own waterfalls and ice caves.
The Upper Ice Cave Hill Trail is a moderate two mile hike offering a few look out points throughout. This trail dives deep into the wilderness with potential to see native wildlife and views of the geological rock formations in the hillsides.
Hiking not a strong suit? The waterfall is a short walk from the parking area with grassy areas and picnic tables nearby for a scenic snack or meal.
The ice cave is also a short distance from the parking area and perfect for taking pictures of the ice that will stay long past winter, possibly into the summer.
Whether it is made into a day trip or a few nights stay at a local AirB&B/hotel, invite some friends or family. By inviting friends or family the cost of gas and lodging can be divided up to make it more affordable, reducing the financial stress of a staycation and also enhancing your mental health.
Being outdoors exposed to natural sunlight and fresh air can naturally boost serotonin levels leaving one to feel in a better mood overall and help mitigate negative or repeating thoughts.
Even if you don’t plan to make the trip, try to make an effort to get outside over break to enjoy the benefits of sunshine and fresh air.
