Sophomore Shayla Dean of Zearing recorded her first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s basketball team to a 100-70 win over the Grand View University junior varsity (GVUJV) November 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

Dean, who also had a team-high six assists, was one of six DMACC players to score in double figures as the Bears improved to 3-2 for the season. Sophomore Aaliyah Brown of Crawfordsville had 14 points, freshman Molly Mitchell of Okoboji scored 13 points and sophomores Kelsey Pretz of Columbus Junction and Angel Agoth of Rochester, Minn., and freshman Regan Shockley of Hartley finished with 12 points apiece.

DMACC, ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led throughout the game. The Bears had a 26-15 advantage after the first quarter, led 52-29 at halftime and were up 77-49 after three quarters. DMACC shot 51 percent in the win, draining 38 of 74 field goal attempts, including 5-of-21 from three-point range. The Bears were 19-of-25 at the free throw line.

Dean’s 10 lifted DMACC to a 52-49 advantage on the boards. Agoth came away with nine rebounds, Mitchell had seven and Brown finished with six. Dean and Pretz led the Bears in steals with three apiece.

The DMACC women’s basketball team will play in the Emerson Classic Nov. 18 and 19 at Marshalltown. The Bears will face Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKCC) on Nov. 18 and will play the William Penn University junior varsity (WPUJV) on Nov. 19. KCKCC, ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II poll, defeated DMACC 71-58 in the Bears season opener Nov. 4 at Kansas City, Kan.
