The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team ran its record to 7-9 with a four-game sweep of Central Lakes College (CLC)-Brainerd March 18 and 19 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
The Bears won both ends of a doubleheader on March 18, 14-0 and 10-0, and earned 16-1 and 10-0 decisions on March 19. The first three games were called at the end of five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule and the final game ended when DMACC scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The DMACC pitching staff did not allow an earned run during the sweep.
The Bears took the opener on March 18 after beginning the contest with a nine-run rally in the bottom of the first. They added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and scored three times in the bottom of the third. Freshman Keil Krumwiede of Glasgow, Mont., and sophomore Sean Noel of Stillwater, Minn., paced DMACC’s seven-hit attack with a pair of base hits and Krumwiede, sophomores Nick Moffitt of West Des Moines and Conner Klostermann of Dyersville and freshman Jack Johnson of St. Paul, Minn., drove in two runs apiece.
Sophomore Parker Sanburn of Kokomo, Ind., pitched the first three innings and came away with the win. He allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked one. Sophomore Jack Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., recorded three strikeouts in one inning on the mound and freshman Moise Carrasco of Daytona, Fla., gave up one hit and struck out two in one inning of work.
Sophomore Chris Witzke of Humboldt had three hits, including a pair of doubles, as DMACC took the second game. Klostermann and Noel had two hits apiece in the win and Noel came away with a pair of RBIs. DMACC opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first, scored three times in the bottom of the second and took a 10-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and another run in the fourth.
Sophomore Malik Moore of Waukee threw the first four innings, allowing two hits, striking out six and walking one. Sophomore Alex Glick of St. Francis, Minn., pitched the top of the fifth, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Freshman Carson Youngquist of Sussex, Wis., had two hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs to lead the Bears in the opener on March 19. Noel had three hits and three RBIs in the win and Klostermann had a pair of base hits and also drove in three runs. Sophomore Luke Fegen of West Des Moines and Krumwiede had two hits apiece in the win.
DMACC again used rallies to get the victory. The Bears scored three runs in the first, four in the second, six in the third and three in the fourth. Freshman T.J. Fetters of Pleasant Hill pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman John Werner of Burlington struck out two batters in one inning on the mound and freshman Tyler Bujanowski of Oak Creek, Wis., recorded one strikeout in one inning.
Moffitt had three hits and Klostermann and freshman Noah Heitshusen of Williamsburg had two apiece as DMACC closed out the series with a victory in the second game on March 19. Freshman Matt Krambeck of Omaha, Neb., came away with a pair of RBIs in the win. DMACC took a 2-0 lead in the first, padded its lead with a run in the second and went up 6-0 with three runs in the fourth. The Bears added another run in the fifth before their three-run rally in the sixth ended the game.
Witzke pitched the first two innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Freshman Luke Longmuir of Cottage Grove, Minn., allowed one hit, struck out six and walked one in three innings and freshman Alec Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., struck out two batters while throwing one inning.
The DMACC baseball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with doubleheaders against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) March 25 and 26 at the DMACC baseball diamond. Game time is 1 p.m.
