For the second day in a row the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and Ellsworth Community College (ECC) split a two-game baseball series.
The two teams squared off April 17 at the DMACC baseball diamond and the Bears took the opener, 9-1. ECC built a 9-3 lead after five innings and won the second game, 9-8. The split gives DMACC a 19-18 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
Sophomore Conner Klostermann of Dyersville and freshman Jack Johnson of St. Paul, Minn., each homered to lead the Bears to their win in the opener. Sophomore Keil Krumwiede of Glasgow, Mont., led DMACC’s 11-hit attack with three hits and sophomores Michael Michalak of Rochester, Minn., and Sean Noel of Stillwater, Minn., had two hits apiece. Klostermann drove in four runs for the Bears.
DMACC took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and tallied four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Bears put the game out of reach with two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Freshman T.J. Fetters of Pleasant Hill pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two and walked five. Freshman Alex Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., threw three innings and surrendered three hits, struck out one batter and walked one. Holcomb came away with the win to improved to 3-0 for the season. Freshman Matt Krambeck of Omaha, Neb., pitched one inning and gave up one hit.
Noel and sophomore Nick Moffitt of West Des Moines had three hits apiece and Noel drove in a pair of runs in DMACC’s loss in the second game. Krumwiede also had a pair of RBIs in the loss.
Freshman Luke Longmuir of Cottage Grove, Minn., pitched two and two-thirds innings for DMACC and fell to 0-4 with the loss. Longmuir allowed five runs on five hits, struck out two and walked three. Sophomore Jack Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched an inning and a third, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk and freshman Matt Lien of Pine Island, Minn., gave up two runs on two hits with one walk in one inning of work. Krambeck and freshmen Moise Carrasco of Daytona, Fla., and John Werner of Burlington also saw action in the game. Lien gave up two hits in one inning
on the mound and Carrasco allowed three hits over two innings. Werner struck out one batter in one inning.
The DMACC baseball team will travel to Seward, Neb., to face the Midland University junior varsity in a doubleheader April 19. DMACC took both games from the Warriors in a doubleheader April 6 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
