The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) volleyball team won three of four matches in the Topper’s Pizza Yellowjacket Invitational Sept. 15 and 16 at Rochester, Minn.
The Bears, ranked 20th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), defeated Bismarck State College (BSC) and lost to Madison College (MC) in matches on Sept. 15 and were victorious in matches against North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) and Harper College (HC) on Sept. 16 to improve to 8-5 for the season. HC is ranked second in NJCAA Division III. MC is ranked third in NJCAA Division Ill and
Sophomore Lauren Rieck of Ankeny and freshman Peyton Parker of La Porte City had 13 kills apiece and freshman Madison Paulsen of Council Bluffs finished with 11 as DMACC defeated BSC by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-18. The Bears hit .233 in the win, getting 50 kills from 115 attacks with 13 hitting errors.
Sophomore Leiah Paustian of Marshalltown had 45 assists in the win and freshman Gill Tupper of Nevada came away with a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore Rachael Bair of Braddyville had 14 digs, Paulsen finished with 13 and Paustian had 12. Paulsen led DMACC in blocks with two.
Parker had 17 kills, freshman Brianna Harvey of Dysart had 10 and Rieck and Paulsen had eight apiece as DMACC dropped a 23-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-17, 10-15 decision to MC. The Bears finished the match with 48 kills from 166 attacks with 24 hitting errors for a .145 hitting percentage. Paustian led the way in assists with 42 and Parker and freshman Madeline Wagner of Carroll had two ace serves apiece. Bair topped DMACC in digs with 23 and Paulsen and Paustian had 20 and 14 respectively. Rieck led the Bears in blocks with seven, including four solo blocks, and Harvey and Parker finished with three blocks apiece.
Rieck’s 14 kills and 12 by Harvey led DMACC to a 25-15, 25-21, 30-28 win over NDSCS. The Bears got five kills from Paulsen as they hit .277 with 40 kills from 101 attacks and 12 hitting errors. Paustian came away with 37 assists, Wagner had three ace serves and Paulsen finished with two. DMACC got 13 digs from Paulsen, 12 by
Bair, eight from freshman Taylor Schnathorst of Webster City and seven by Paustian. Rieck finished with six blocks and Paustian had three.
Rieck had 17 kills and Paulsen and Parker had 11 apiece to lead DMACC past HC, 26-24, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13. The Bears hit .425, getting 54 kills from 106 attacks with nine hitting errors. Paustian came away with 46 assists, Parker had three ace serves and Paulsen added two. Paulsen led the Bears in digs with 21 and Paustian and freshman Lexi Killinger of Treynor had 18 apiece. Rieck topped DMACC in blocks with four, including three block assists.
The DMACC volleyball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a match against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Sept. 20 at Mason City. The Bears are 1-1 in league play. NIACC is 4-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
