The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s basketball team came away with a win and a loss while competing in the Hawks Classic November 11 and 12 at Norfolk, Neb.
The Bears opened the tournament with a 94-59 loss to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) and defeated North Platte Community College (NPCC), 84-46, to improve to 2-2 for the season.
Sophomores Kelsey Pretz of Columbus Junction and Shayla Dean of Zearing scored 13 and 10 points respectively in DMACC’s loss to NECC. The Bears trailed 23-13 at the end of the first quarter, 50-38 at halftime and 72-50 after three quarters.
DMACC shot a disappointing 34 percent in the loss, connecting on 20 of 59 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-14 from three-point range and 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Samantha Hughes of Marshalltown hauled down nine rebounds and freshman Molly Mitchell of Okoboji had seven as NECC came away with a 38-35 advantage on the boards. Freshman Ira Allee of Altoona dished out a team-high four assists and Dean and freshman Regan Shockley of Hartley had three assists apiece.
Pretz led five players in double figures with 15 points in DMACC’s win over NPCC. The Bears had a 21-10 advantage after the first quarter, led 51-21 at halftime and were up 74-32 after the third quarter.
Dean finished with 14 points in the win, Mitchell and sophomore Angel Agoth of Rochester, Minn., scored 12 points apiece and freshman Beth Atwood of Packwood contributed 10 points.
DMACC shot 51 percent in the win, hitting 31 of 61 field goal attempts, including 5-of-13 from three-point range. The Bears were 18-of-21 at the free throw line.
