Sophomore Shayla Dean of Zearing scored 17 points to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s basketball team to an 88-87 win over Adelaide (Australia) November 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

Freshman Molly Mitchell of Okoboji scored 14 points in the win and sophomores Amanda Cartney of Hudson and Samantha Hughes of Marshalltown had 13 points apiece as the Bears improved to 6-2 with their fifth consecutive victory.

DMACC, ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led 21-19 after the first quarter, trailed 42-39 at halftime and was down 66-61 after three quarters before outscoring Adelaide 27-21 in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.

The Bears shot 43 percent for the game, hitting 29 of 67 field goal attempts. DMACC was 8-of-22 from three-point range and got the win at the free throw line where the Bears went 22-of-27.

Adelaide had a 35-34 advantage on the boards with Mitchell getting a double-double with 12 rebounds to lead DMACC. Cartney, Dean, Hughes and freshman Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids had four rebounds apiece. Clark led the Bears in assists with six and Dean and sophomore Kelsey Pretz of Columbus Junction had five and four respectively. Dean, Hughes and Clark had two steals apiece in the win.

The DMACC women’s basketball team will face the Grand View University junior varsity Nov. 29 at Des Moines. The Bears defeated the Vikings, 100-70, in a game Nov. 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
