Currently, there are three donation events happening on the DMACC Boone campus. Students can take these opportunities to pick and choose their way to help the community.
First, The Nursing Club Elementary School Clothing & Supply Drive. This project is to help local elementary school students at Page Elementary School, Sacred Heart School, and Howe Elementary School with the coming winter months. Katie Namovicz, nursing instructor, said several items are needed. “Pants, underwear, mittens, also juice boxes and granola bars because some students come to school without having breakfast.” The deadline for this donation is the Wednesday after Thanksgiving; the drop off spot is the nursing office room 168 in Boone DMACC campus.Fall 17 Clothing Drive Flyer
Secondly, Domestic Violence Awareness Month donation drive. The month of October is domestic violence awareness month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who are working to end violence against women and their children. Christine Whitney, librarian/media specialist, said,”You can donate anything you would use when you get ready in the morning or at night before bed. So shampoo and conditioner, body wash, facial wash, deodorant, hand cream, face cream, razor blazes, shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, brushes/combs, sanitary supplies.” The donation drop off box is in the Boone Campus library service desk. The deadline for this donation drive is Oct. 31.
Lastly, the Winter Warmth Drive. Nancy Woods, math/physics professor, shared some information about this event. “In Boone County, there are a lot of individuals who are in need of coats, boots, hats, and gloves. So the Salvation Army in Boone reached out to me and asked if we, as a campus, could help to gather some of those items for our community members.” The donation drive accepts anything that can help community members stay warm, any size, any age, any items. There are three drop off locations on the Boone campus: outside the main office, the south end of the hall on the second floor, and the coat rack in the Courter Center. The deadline is Oct. 31 so the items can be delivered to the Salvation Army during the first week of November.
