On April 7th I was one of the staff and students who attended the One Iowa Gala. One Iowa held their first Gala in 2010 after the Supreme Court’s decision in the Varnum v. Brien, which recognized marriage equality. The One Iowa organization continues their Gala every year to celebrate their efforts to continue to preserve and advance equality for the LGBT Community. They held a live and silent auction, provided a wonderful dinner, and had a cocktail hour for a meet-and-greet. The unofficial total raised during the event was $170,000. They also had an awards ceremony.
I was very proud to be with my DMACC family at this event. It was a formal event so I got dressed up for the occasion. It was my very first Gala. The highlight of the evening was getting to shake hands with Justice Cady, chief judge of Iowa Supreme Court, who wrote the Varnum decision.
I want to thank DMACC for giving me a ticket to attend my first Gala.
