Both men’s and women’s golf teams have featured an ICCAC Athlete of the Week this year, with both athletes earning the award in the same week. The two Bears who earned the award were each program’s first winners of the year.

Ashley Michel from the women’s golf team shot a career best 77 in the first round of the Waldorf tournament this past week. That was the first time Michel posted a score in the 70’s in her collegiate career. She nearly matched her stroke record in the second day of the tournament, posting an 81 on the day. Michel’s total of 158 earned her the top medalist spot of the two-day Waldorf tournament. She is the first ICCAC Athlete of the Week for the Bear’s women’s golf team this year and took the award for the week of September 20-26.

Tyler Saansgard shared the top medalist honor in ICCAC fall preview, earning him the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for the week of September 20-26. Saansgard is the first athlete of the Bear’s men’s golf team to earn the award this year. He shot three under-par, with 69 total strokes in the competition, and also led the event with seven birdies on the day. Later in the week, Saansgard would help the Bears earn a team championship in the Quad Cup played in Okoboji. The competition featured DMACC, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, and North Iowa Area Community College.

The men’s team will take a near three-week break before competing in the NJCAA Fall Preview October 18-19. The competition will take place in Joplin, Missouri at the Twin Hills Country Club. The women’s team will compete October 11-12, in Spencer, at the Northwest Iowa Collegiate Showcase. Both competitions will round out the fall season for each program.
