DMACC student DeNae Nash, 21, of Ames, formerly of Waterloo, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Services were held on December 2, 2020 in Waterloo.

DeNae enrolled at DMACC in January 2019 to play basketball for the Bears. She was not eligible to play, but she could practice and be part of the team. While living on campus, she worked at the Boone Wal-Mart.

According to Steve Krafcisin, Women’s Basketball Coach at DMACC, “DeNae was quiet but always had a smile for everyone. She was always polite and easy to like.

“I received a text from a former player saying that DeNae needs our prayers and that she was in a hospital on a ventilator, so I thought that meant covid. I texted DeNae’s mom to express my concern and offer support and she replied ‘thank you’ and didn’t think DeNae was going to make it,” he said.

Krafcisin called one of his friends in Waterloo who said it wasn’t COVID-19 and they rescued her from Lake Michigan.

“I was shocked and stunned that her life was cut drastically short. She could’ve become a model, teacher, coach, whatever… but unfortunately, we will never know. I am so glad I was a part of her life for a little time… DeNae had so much to give and so much life to live; she was going to set the world on fire.”
